Problem Set Answer Keys

Module 1:
Place Value and
Decimal Fractions

Engage New York Math - Engage (Great Minds) math curriculum follows the Common Core Standards. It is a a curriculum the district uses alongside GO Math. Our daily math lessons use a CGI (Cognitively Guided Instruction) approach which focuses on each student's development of a deeper understanding of both how problems are solved and why various methods work.

Throughout the year, students will be asked to demonstrate the following mathematical practices:

  1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.

  2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.

  3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

  4. Model with mathematics.

  5. Use appropriate tools strategically.

  6. Attend to precision.

  7. Look for and make use of structure.

  8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Engage NY Lesson Videos

Good Tips for Parents

1.  Watch the Videos with your child (if they seem confused).

2. Trust the process! Know that your child may not "get it" the first time around, but they have been left with mathematical residue that will "sit" and in time sink in as your child makes sense of the math.

3. Class Work/Posters- I will also be posting class work and mathematical posters we create in class that also can be used as a guide for your child. You'll be seeing Cognitively Guided Instruction at it's core by using these posters since they were created and guided by the students themselves, to later be used as reference for their learning!

Math Homework Help:

1. Students can always watch the videos (to the right). These are five to fifteen minute re-teach of the lesson.

2. Allow your child to use their mathematical practices and "persevere" while trying to make sense of the problem.

3. Refrain from showing them "the way you learned." Cognitively Guided Instruction is premised on the idea that kids use their own thinking to guide their learning.

4. If your child is truly struggling, write a quick note on the page for me to read the next day. Please try not to show them a different strategy that isn't shown in the homework or discovered from your child.
